Background
Elizabeth is the wife of Edward Johnson III, chairman of Fidelity Investments. She holds trusteeships with both the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Winterthur Museum (Delaware) — which means she carries a personal security keycard for the MFA as part of her duties.
In late October 1986, Elizabeth and her husband were guests at the Park Plaza Hotel.
Session 02 — Lee's First Mark
Lee entered the Johnsons' suite during the day, wearing a stolen housekeeping uniform. He inspected Elizabeth's handbag and found two items of interest:
- A pearl necklace valued at approximately $150, with her initials engraved on the clasp. Lee passed — the initials would make fencing it traceable.
- A security keycard for the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Lee took this.
Elizabeth has not yet noticed the keycard is missing. No alarm has been raised.
